Today, I got a kiss.
It was a kiss on my cheek from our older son, his eyes bright with adoration.
Today, I got a hug
as I put him in the car, bound to a destination he wanted to see.
Today, sleep deprived and bleary-eyed,
I sorted through picture symbols in a drawer, determined to close a communication gap.
Today, I saw a light bulb shine
when he found the picture that showed what he wanted to say.
Today, he pointed to the picture,
asking the word that at the time was just beyond his grasp.
Today, I am thankful for
the alternative means of communication that opened our son's world...
...and afforded me a kiss.

He always has a way of doing something like this on days when he's tried me VERY HARD! lol. :)
DeleteNice way to write this, Amy. Heartfelt.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could have captured an image of his face for all to see. :) I'm so thankful for people who strive to offer the tools that help children like him.
DeleteLove this, Amy! So glad you have survived another "vacation!"
ReplyDeleteWhy do we always forget this pictures?? Everyone pushes the dynavox...which is good but doesn't really suit the home environment. We just forget...ugh. Today, pictures are front and center!! YAY to school!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLovely, Amy. I like the way you styled it as a poem. And I"m so glad you were able to break through with pictures.
ReplyDeleteAwww that is wonderful! There is nothing sweeter in the world than a spontaneous hug and kiss from our kids. ♥
